This poster for Cachou Lajaunie was designed by famous poster artist Leonetto Cappiello. This image features a woman with red hair calmly exhaling smoke from her cigarette. Set against a deep green background, the floral delicacy and color of her dress catches everyone’s eye. In her right hand, she holds a bright yellow canister of Cachou Laujaunie, a candy developed in 1880 to promote fresh breath and dental health.

Cachou Lajaunie was developed by pharmacist Leon Lajaunie. Made in Toulouse, France, these small liquorice and mint flavored candies were created to encourage fresh breath and marketed as a solution to smokers, chauffeurs and cyclists. Cachou Lajuanie is a popular brand for fresh breath to date, and you can still purchase the candies that come in the iconic yellow tin.

Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. His compositions are uncomplicated and often feature a graceful figure with an oversized rendition of the product against a simple color background. The typography is often minimized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed for the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moments’ glance. It was ideal for the fast paced travel and attention of busy city life.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
