This vintage advertising poster was created by Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) for Cafés Labrador of Le Havre. The design features a costumed monkey dressed in bright attire, balancing with a cane while holding up a box of Labrador coffee. The playful image is bold and memorable, emphasizing the brand name in large letters along with the company’s address and reminder to “Exiger la boîte cachetée” (Insist on the sealed box).Leonetto Cappiello, born in Livorno, Italy, was one of the most influential poster artists of the early 20th century. Often called “the father of modern advertising,” he broke from the detailed Art Nouveau style and introduced simplified figures set against strong, colorful backgrounds. Known as the “father of modern advertising,” he revolutionized the poster art form by replacing the busy, decorative style of the Belle Époque with bold, simplified images designed to seize immediate attention. Cappiello often used striking figures, humor, and vibrant color. In the early 1900’s at the beginning of his career, Cappiello frequently used striking animal or fantastical figures in his poster work, such as his famous devil for Maurin Quina or the clown with a horse for Chocolat Klaus, creating instantly recognizable images that gave brands lasting identities. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in very good condition. It has benefited by professional restoration to minimize any defects in the paper. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
