Carry Your Share - Buy War Bonds

This poster design was commissioned by Abbott Labs , a medical products company that supplied the United States military forces in World War I and II . The text on the bottom of the poster reads "Published by Abbott Laboratories as a Contribution to the Treasury's Schools-At-War Program". This particular design emphasizes all citizens in the homefront should bear their obligation to support the war effort by purchasing war bonds to help finance the war. In a crafty trick, the artist Joseph Hirsch ( 1910-1981) put his name Hirsch on the duffle bag carried by one of the soldiers in the image and it is said that Hirsch was also depicting himself and his art kit.

Born in Philadelphia, Joseph Hirsch began his study of art at the Philadelphia Museum when he was seventeen. He participated in the Works Project Administration in the easel painting division, with occasional work on murals. During World War II, Hirsch took part in the war effort as an artist war correspondent, recording significant battles and events. After the war he taught at the Chicago Institute of Art.
