Heavyweight Champion Gene Tunney is featured in this poster that was a supplement of The Chicago Sun on Sunday, October 11, 1942. It is part of a series of three posters featuring famous boxers serving in the War, with Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis rounding out the group. Details about Tunney's station and boxing record are below his illustrated portrait.

Gene Tunney (1898 - 1978) became a world heavyweight champion after defeating Jack Dempsey in 1926. Known as "The Fighting Marine", Tunney served in WWI and boxed his way through Europe. In the Inter War years, Tunney became a household name for his undefeated title and most famous fight against Dempsey. He was notorious for his love of literature, and married into the Carnegie family which led to a secondary career in business. In WWII, the Navy asked Tunney to lead its physical fitness program for pilots. He retired from the military with the esteemed title of Commander.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
