This stunning vintage poster image for Cirio, created in the mid-1920s by Leonetto Cappiello, is an elegant celebration of the company’s high-quality canned fruits and vegetables. The artwork, rendered in an Art Nouveau-inspired style by Leonetto Cappiello, features a radiant woman emerging from a can of Cirio produce, surrounded by an abundant array of cherries, olives, onions, and other fresh ingredients. Her flowing golden skirt and billowing red-and-white ribbons evoke a sense of movement and festivity, symbolizing the freshness and vitality of Cirio’s preserved foods.
Founded in 1856 by Francesco Cirio in Turin, Italy, Cirio quickly became a pioneer in the food preservation industry. Francesco Cirio was a visionary entrepreneur who mastered the art of canning fresh produce at a time when food preservation was still in its infancy. By utilizing innovative sterilization techniques, Cirio was able to supply high-quality Italian tomatoes, vegetables, and fruits to consumers both in Italy and abroad.
As demand grew, Cirio expanded its operations, establishing processing plants in the fertile agricultural regions of southern Italy, particularly in Campania, where the company sourced its famous San Marzano tomatoes. By the early 20th century, Cirio had become a global brand, recognized for its premium canned goods, which were exported across Europe and beyond.
Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. His compositions are uncomplicated and often feature a graceful figure with an oversized rendition of the product against a simple color background. The typography is often minimalized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moments’ glance. It was ideal for the fast-paced travel and attention of busy city life.
