Made at the same plant as the famed Bitter Campari, Cordial Campari is a sweeter, more syrup-like liqueur based in a raspberry distillate. Cordial Campari was introduced in the middle of the 20th century and ceased production in 1992.

In this poster, we see a stoic St. Bernard rescue dog carrying a barrel filled with the sweet Cordial Campari upon his neck, on a mission to save fallen or lost travelers, keeping them warm with the sweet liqueur upon their return. This wholesome image alludes to the myth of the St. Bernard, which goes back to 1820 when a St. Bernard bearing a small neck cask, much like the one featured in this poster, rescued an individual high in the Swiss Alps. The dogs were supposedly kept at a monastery high on The Great St. Bernard Pass in Switzerland and would take found fallen travelers into the care of the Monks that resided there.

Founded by Gaspare Campari in Milan, the Campari company has been in operation since 1860. Best known for its signature drink, Bitter Campari, the company also produces wines, spirits as well as soft drinks. Presently, the Campari company is a global enterprise with its products in over 190 countries worldwide.

Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. His compositions are uncomplicated and often feature a graceful figure with an oversized rendition of the product against a simple color background. The typography is often minimized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed for the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moments’ glance. It was ideal for the fast-paced travel and attention of busy city life.
