Delahaye is a 1989 poster by Pierre Fix-Masseau. The artwork features the classic 1937 Delahaye model 135 M amidst the backdrop of the famous Casino de Monte-Carlo. This poster commemorates the 1937 Monte-Carlo Rally, at which a competition version of the car won first place. The specific model in this poster was produced only in 1937, and it is believed less than 30 examples were ever made. It is not uncommon for this car to sell for upwards of six million dollars when it appears at auction today.

Delahaye was in business from 1894 - 1954, and is heralded for creating some of the most beautiful (and now collective and expensive) cars of all time. This poster perfectly captures the elegance of not only the Delahaye car, but the lifestyle of those who are able to own and drive one. The couple enter their luxury car after an evening at one of the most famous casinos in one of the most elite locations in the world, their clothing further underlining their status. This is an elegant image that oozes of luxury and style.

Pierre Fix-Masseau (1905-1994) was the son of accomplished French sculptor, Pierre Felix-Masseau. Fix-Masseau began his career as an apprentice to master Art Deco designer A.M. Cassandre, for whom he worked for from 1926 to 1928. This experience greatly impacted Fix-Masseau, who continued to work within the Art Deco style for the remainder of his long career. Cassandre's interest in foreshortening, heightened focal points, and flattened planes can be seen in Fix-Masseau's works. Fix-Masseau combined Cassandre's influence with his own mastery of perspective and intricate detail to create his own, distinctive style. Fix-Masseau is best remembered for his posters featuring railway and automotive themes.

This artwork was commissioned towards the end of the artist's life, but still captures the flair of elegant design that typified Fix-Masseau's artwork.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
