Evian - Cachat

Two water nymphs dance in a circle around an elegant bottle of Evian mineral water in this rare 1925 poster by Leonetto Cappiello. Their garland of flowers bobs and weaves as they dance, creating a sense of movement and whimsy in an otherwise pared-down composition.

Evian-Cachat, known primarily for the Evian brand of mineral water, originated in the French Alps in 1869 when the Count de La Grande Maison discovered a spring in Evian-les-Bains with therapeutic properties. The brand was officially established in 1880, named after the town, and gained a reputation for purity and health benefits. In 1908, the Cachat family became involved, enhancing the brand's prominence with their own spring water. This partnership played a significant role in developing Evian into a notable luxury product.

Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. His compositions are uncomplicated and often feature a graceful figure with an oversized rendition of the product against a simple color background. The typography is often minimized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed for the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moments’ glance. It was ideal for the fast paced travel and attention of busy city life.
