Imagine a motorcycle that has such a smooth ride, you can apply your lipstick from the backseat without even a smudge! This classic Art Deco design illustrates the elegance and ease of the Fabrique Nationale brand of motorcycles. The masculine, shadowed figure appeals to the notorious intrigue of motorcyclists, while the well-dressed woman takes all the focus. It is a clever design that reads as universal. This poster was created for a specific store, Leon Houard, that sold Fabrique Nationale products in Ghent (known as 'Gand' in French), Belgium.

The Fabrique Nationale Company is based in Herstal, Belgium. Founded in 1889, it began as a manufacturer of bicycle parts and military arms. In later branched into bicycles, motorcycles, and diversified armaments. The company still is operating today, but now strictly focuses on firearms.

Marcello Nizzoli (1887-1969) was an Italian illustrator, industrial designer, and architect. Nizzoli created many large scale and Art Deco styled posters for the Campari company. Nizzoli was also the chief designer for Olivetti in the 1930s and was responsible for designing the iconic Lettera 22 portable typewriters in 1950. Nizzoli’s design style can be characterized as a combination of organic form and functional machine production intended for mass production.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
