This striking travel poster was created for Trans World Airlines (TWA) to promote its jet-age service to Hong Kong, one of the most exotic and aspirational destinations in the airline’s expanding Pacific network. The design presents a richly layered collage of Hong Kong imagery: a traditional Chinese opera mask in the foreground is combined with red-sailed junks in Victoria Harbour, a pagoda tower, dragon motifs, and figures in motion. These elements are arranged in a dynamic, almost theatrical composition that conveys both cultural depth and modern energy. The bold “Hong Kong” headline and the “Fly TWA” mark anchor the image as a piece of airline advertising while allowing the artwork itself to dominate.David Klein (1918–2005) was one of the most important and influential American poster artists of the mid-twentieth century. Best known for his work for TWA, Klein revolutionized airline advertising by introducing painterly, expressive imagery at a time when most travel posters relied on literal photographic realism. His posters for New York, Paris, Rome, and other destinations are considered classics of modern graphic design, and his work is represented in major museum collections. Klein’s ability to combine bold color, simplified form, and cultural symbolism helped define the visual identity of TWA during its most celebrated years.TWA’s international route expansion in the 1950s and 1960s coincided with the rise of long-haul jet travel, transforming distant cities like Hong Kong into realistic vacation and business destinations for American travelers. Posters such as this one were central to that effort, presenting foreign cultures as glamorous, accessible, and visually irresistible. The Hong Kong design stands out within Klein’s body of work for its intricate detail and strong Asian iconography, offering a vivid blend of tradition and modernity that reflected the city’s role as a gateway between East and West. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction.
