In the Post World War ll era, Howard Hughes, the owner of TWA was a dominant force in expanding and promoting the routes flown by his company. As the economy was vastly improving, airline travel for business and pleasure was on the upswing and posters such as this were instrumental in promoting this form of travel. This St. Louis, Missouri poster was created by the gifted American artist David Klein (1918 -2005), and shows off the Atomic Age beauty of the St. Louis Gateway Arch, designed by Eero Saarninen in 1965. This important element of architecture serves as a monument to both St. Louis' role in the Westward expansion of America, Thomas Jefferson's legacy, and Dred and Harriet Scott, former slaves who sued the city for their freedom. This is the 'up up and away' variant of this poster.

Klein was best known for his influential work in advertising. Although he produced illustrations for Broadway theatrical productions, Hollywood films, the United States Army, and numerous corporate clients, Klein is best remembered for the iconic travel images he created for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines (TWA) during the 1950's and 1960's.
