Safety was a major theme of Production genre posters created during World War II. This 1944 poster entitled, "It's Plain Horse Sense" by Stanley Ekman highlights the need for workers to properly follow safety procedures. Safety in the workplace was important to combat non-production due to injury. During the war, factory workers were promoted in public service announcements to the same level as soldiers abroad.

Stanley Ekman (1913-1998) was an American illustrator and painter. He began his career in the 1930's after attending the Art Institute of Chicago. He designed the logo for American Airlines, and was an active illustrator for major magazines including the Saturday Evening Post. He was versatile as an illustrator and created artworks in the realist style of Norman Rockwell, as well as a cartoon inspired style indicative of mid-century advertising.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
