This is part of a series of four posters by the artist, James Henry Daugherty (1889-1974) that highlighted stories from the American Revolutionary War. Here, we see the bravery of Naval captain, John Paul Jones as he led his men to defeat the mighty British Imperial Navy. The message linking the Revolution with WWII is clear; bravery is needed in spirit, and purchasing war bonds and stamps will help fund the way.

The artist of the poster, James Henry Daugherty started his career studying in the Corcoran Gallery's Free School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He then moved to Europe with his family and in London continued his artistic studies. After returning to the United States in 1907, Daugherty moved to New York City and worked as an illustrator. During WWI he got commissions from different US Government agencies to design propaganda posters and also worked in a camouflage unit and experimented with colors. During the 1920's, Daugherty began painting in a more realist style and was concentrated on murals. In addition to painting murals, Daugherty illustrated over fifty children's books. His works are part of collections at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
