This original vintage poster was created in 1923 by Leonetto Cappiello to advertise the “Journée de La Femme et l’Enfant” and its “Grand Bal d’Affiches” at the Casino de Monte-Carlo. The Bibliothèque nationale de France dates the poster to 1923 and records it as a color lithograph printed in Paris by Atelier d’Art Devambez. The poster announces a special day devoted to “Woman and Child,” culminating in a Grand Poster Ball at the Casino de Monte-Carlo on Friday, February 15. The event appears to have been organized as a benefit associated with women and children. The “Bal d’Affiches,” or Poster Ball, was a festive costume event built around the imagery and characters of contemporary advertising posters—an especially appropriate subject for Cappiello, whose figures had become instantly recognizable throughout France and Europe. Cappiello depicts an exuberant woman celebrating amid falling confetti, dressed in a flowing costume of red, white, blue, yellow and green. The theatrical figure and vivid red background capture the carnival atmosphere of the event, while the large white and black typography clearly announces the occasion and its Monte-Carlo setting.Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) was an Italian-born artist who established his career in Paris and became one of the most important figures in the development of modern advertising posters. Moving away from the elaborate decorative approach of earlier poster artists, Cappiello frequently placed a single bold figure against a strong, flat-colored background. His instantly recognizable images were created for many of the leading European brands and events of the early twentieth century and helped establish a new visual language for commercial advertising. To learn more about the artwork of Cappiello, please follow this link: The Ross Art Group – For the Love of CappielloThis is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction.
