La Maison du Porte Plume is a rare poster for fountain pens and inks by the artist Jean D'Ylen. He uses the whimsical central figure to capture our attention and then uses the fine detail of the pens and the ink bottles to let us know what products the store sells. Even though the image was created over 90 years ago, the store is still in existence. We are delighted to find such a rare poster in superb condition.
The whimsical image of the costumed man surrounded by oversized writing instruments and ink bottles is a wonderful example of the artistry and appeal of Jean D’Ylen’s work. Jean D'Ylen (1886 – 1938) was trained in the art of designing jewelry and was recruited by the Vercasson Printing Company to be the understudy to Leonetto Cappiello, their top designer of posters. When Cappiello left Vercasson, D'Ylen assumed the role of top designer. He was a master of combining humorous messages with well executed artwork and masterful colors to create some of the most sought after posters printed in the 1920’s.
