This lively poster by famous poster artist, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was created in 1890 for a Parisian ballet called 'La Reve'. This was the height of Asian influence in France, and the impact of Orientalism can be seen throughout this composition. The prima ballerina is cloaked in a kimono, and dances with a fan behind her head as the company performs behind her. It is an elaborate design with ornate detailing.

Art Nouveau was an art movement in vogue for the small period of time from the 1880s until the outbreak of WWI. Deeply informed by nature, it focused on abstracted organic patterns and decorative forms as a break from the increased streamlining and hard lines of industrial design. It is often associated with other similar movements of the time in painting, furniture design, and literature like the Arts and Crafts, Symbolism, and Aesthetics movements.

Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859 - 1923) was a prolific artist known for his Art Nouveau paintings and posters. Before gaining traction as an Art Nouveau connoisseur, Steinlen studied design at the University of Lausanne and worked as a designer trainee at a textile mill in France. A lover of cats, one of Steinlen’s most iconic images is the Le Chat Noir, a club in Montmartre where Steinlen met artists Henri Matisse, Adolphe Willette, Felix Vallotton and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. The works of Steinlein paintings were frequently displayed at the Salon des Indépendants and he worked for magazines such as Le Rire and Gil Blas. Today, his works can be found in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
