Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 and 1900. The varied selection of prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience it showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format.
Emile Berchmans ( 1867 – 1947) was a Belgian artist who created this design . "Berchmans, for his part, astonishes with his power and vigour, and his output of posters was considerable…we can be sure to find solid draftsmanship with strong outlines, good sense of composition and accented colours. His most famous successes are of an astonishing modernism…The outline swells and thickens for the 'Salon de 1896.' The colours remain few, warm, poured into flat tints. Berchmans succeeds with simple elements. A perfect mastery of blacks and greys, seconded by one or two vivid colours, reds or oranges, strongly outlined drawing in a sober and clear composition. He left us a legacy of strong and vivid images that have survived the passage of time without a wrinkle"(Paris 1900, p.152).

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
