Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15-inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 – 1900. The varied selection of prints was sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience, the publication showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format.

This poster by Louis Rhead for the Morning Journal, advertises new management and a cleaner and more truthful publication. In its horizontal orientation, the poster is beautifully stylized in a typical Belle Epoque style. Two women flank the center text, surrounded by lush greenery, and a stylized morning sun. All this, and the rooster on the left-hand side of the poster imply a brand-new beginning.

Louis Rhead (1857-1926) was an American artist and illustrator. Born originally in London, Rhead emigrated to the United States in 1883. That same year Rhead was offered a position as the Art Director for a New York publishing firm, D. Appleton. Rhead’s work was heavily influenced by Eugene Grasset and his poster art made regular appearances in Harpers Bazaar, Century Magazine and Ladies Home Journal. More notably, Rhead was awarded the gold medal for Best American Poster Design at the first International poster show in Boston in 1895.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
