This wonderful print by Henri Matisse is titled, "La Danseuse Creole" ("Creole Dancer" in English). Originally created as one of his famous cutout collages in 1950, it depicts famous dancer Katherine Dunham who sat for him while visiting his home in France. In 1965, the French Tourism Board asked Matisse's permission to turn this piece into an advertisement for his hometown of Nice.

Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) is one of the most important artists of the Modern Art movement of the 20th Century. Known for his use of bright colors, lively subject matter, and playful abstractions he was also something of a Man-About-Town in the South of France. He lived in Nice from 1917 until his death, and loved the lifestyle of the Riviera. Towards the end of Henri Matisse's life, he began to experience health issues such as severe arthritis and diminished vision. Ever prolific, Matisse decided to overcome these ailments by working in paper cutouts and collage; these later works are seen by many as his best.
