This very attractive scenic poster was created by the French Railway Authority in the post World War II era to promote visitor traffic to the French countryside in Normandie. Located 2 hours from Paris, Normandy ( Normandie in French) is a lush area with many green spaces as well as seaside areas. This image was created by Raoul Dufy in a format that was used repeatedly by the French Railways to popularize travel to various regions. The format uses a central scene surrounded by a beige border with a simple bold title on the bottom. This poster was issued with English text but other versions were created in French text.

Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) was a French Fauvist painter, who is known for his colorful and loosely painted art style. Many of his works feature landscapes and social events, a favorite of which were regattas and seascapes. Impressionist landscape painters, such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro had profound influence on Dufy's artistic sensibilities. In 1952 he received the grand prize for painting at the 26th Venice Biennale.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
