Alaska by Pacific Northern Airlines captures the optimism and adventurous spirit of postwar American air travel, when airlines sold not merely transportation, but the promise of discovery. This striking design presents Alaska as a land of dramatic contrasts and outdoor adventure, assembling a vivid montage of iconic imagery: a soaring propeller aircraft overhead, Native Alaskan totem poles, skiers gliding above snow-covered peaks, a fisherman battling a leaping salmon, and a powerful brown bear surveying the rugged landscape. The bold typography anchors the composition with unmistakable confidence, while the imagery communicates the extraordinary diversity of experiences awaiting travelers to America’s last frontier.Pacific Northern Airlines traces its roots to 1932, when bush pilot Arthur Woodley founded Woodley Airways in Alaska. Renamed Pacific Northern Airlines in 1945, the company became an important carrier linking Seattle with Anchorage and promoting Alaska tourism during the 1950s and 1960s, before its acquisition by Western Airlines in 1967. Based on the airline’s branding, aircraft imagery, and period references from dealer and archival sources, this poster was most likely issued circa 1950–1955, during the early years of Pacific Northern’s expanded commercial passenger service to Alaska. (Tschanz Rare Books)The artist for this poster is unfortunately not definitively identified, and I was unable to locate a fully reliable attribution in authoritative sources. The style is consistent with the commercial illustration work produced for mid-century American airline advertising, where many promotional travel posters were commissioned from studio illustrators whose names were not always credited on the printed works. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
