In this poster created by Aaron Amspoker, a Mexican bullfighter is posing in a heroic posture with a red cloth in hand while a strong black bull stands right next to him. Amspoker intentionally presents the arena in dark and brings all the light and color to the bullfighter, who is looking aside contemptuously. The bull is hidden in the dark but revealing its sharp horns and fixating its eye on its enemy. This vivid scene immediately triggers our curiosity: what is going to happen next? This poster was created to promote traveling to Mexico with Pan Am.
Pan Am (Pan American Airlines) was founded in 1927 by Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, Carl A. Spaatz, and John H. Jouett. The company opened new travel routes to South America in the 1920’s and secured the support of Charles Lindbergh to help establish landing rights to many exotic locales. In pop culture, a Pan Am plane was used by the Beatles when they first arrived in the United States and can be seen in many of the photographs from the event. In film, Pan Am planes were featured in James Bond movies including Live and Let Die, as well as Spielberg’s 2002 film Catch Me If You Can about the true story of Frank Abagnale, Jr. who impersonated a Pan Am pilot in the 1960’s. Pan Am Airlines ceased operation in 1991.
