The artistic hand of Picasso is evident in this Galerie 65 poster. The brushstrokes - hurried and expressionistic form an owl, flower, and glass in the forefront of the image. In this playful and colorful visual endeavor, we can also observe the Spanish artists’ use of freehand lettering in both the name of the gallery space and dates that the exhibition was held- August 14th to September 30th.

In the 1950’s, Mourlot Freres, a French printing company printed many original posters of important artists of the day. In 1959 company printed the series Affiches Originales for collectors. Affiches Originales refers to the reduced lithographic versions of the original posters created by contemporary visionaries such as Picasso, Chagall, Braque, Matisse, Miro, Leger, and Dufy. Unfortunately, there is little information on Galerie 65 located in Cannes or the exhibition that this specific poster was illustrated for.

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, also known as Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881 - 8 April 1973), was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. Regarded as one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
