Wherever You Go… Strachan is c.1940 branch advertisement for the Post Office Savings Bank in the United Kingdom. Posters from this series depict regional branches of the Post Office Savings Bank throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland. Strachen is a small village assigned to the Banchory post town and is located in the Kincardshire area of Scotland.
The Post Office Savings Bank was formed in 1861 as part of a plan to finance the public debt. It allowed for accessible savings accounts for the lower -middle class. The history of banking in the United Kingdom had coalesced around major cities and catered to upper society. With the development of the Post Office Savings Bank, a majority of the citizenship, including those in rural areas, had access to secure banking. The banks also served as an important outlet for investments and sold Government Bonds and War Savings Certificates. Today, the Post Office Savings Bank operates under a new identity, National Savings and Investments.
