This striking Art Deco travel poster was created for the Paris–Lyon–Méditerranée Railway (PLM) to advertise winter automobile service along the celebrated Route des Alpes. The design captures the romance of winter travel in the French Alps, depicting an automobile winding through snow-laden pines with the grandeur of Mont Revard and the surrounding peaks rising in the distance. The Route des Alpes was a frequent subject of French travel posters in the interwar years, but almost always portrayed in summer—sunlit roads, alpine meadows, and dramatic rocky passes. Jean Julien’s interpretation is rare in presenting the alpine route as a winter destination, highlighting the modernity of motor transport and the appeal of snowy landscapes. This winter theme was an innovative twist, emphasizing PLM’s year-round services from Nice to Aix-les-Bains and Mont Revard.Jean Julien (1888–1967) was a French illustrator and poster artist known for his clean, graphic style and strong use of line. Active during the 1920s and 1930s, he worked extensively with the PLM railway and other French travel companies, producing images that blended modernist aesthetics with atmospheric landscapes. His work often balanced elegance and practicality, embodying the optimism of the golden age of travel posters. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
