"Tattooed Woman Holding a Rose" is one of the jewels of our Gallery. Printed at the beginning of Andy Warhol’s career, this work of art is exceptionally rare. A hand printed screen print on Japanese printmaking paper, this fun and elegant piece served as Andy Warhol’s calling card and portfolio in 1955. The woman’s pin-up silhouette is filled with logos of companies Warhol hoped to work for, and the print would have been rolled up and mailed to advertising agencies around New York City. In the center, we see the artist’s old fashioned NYC phone number and subsequent reference to the Murray Hill neighborhood he lived in at the time. This early example of Andy Warhol’s mastery of illustration has been stamped and serialized by The Andy Warhol Foundation, further guaranteeing its authenticity.

Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987) was an American artist, film director and producer. Warhol was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, where he tackled the integration of art, celebrity and consumerist culture in his works. Well known for his serigraphs such as his Marilyn Diptych and Campbell’s Soup Cans, Warhol also produced and directed his own experimental films such as "Chelsea Girls", created Interview Magazine and managed The Velvet Underground. Warhol was multifaceted in medium, using photography, film, sculpture, paint and printmaking to create his various works. Before becoming the art icon he is known as today, Warhol was a commercial illustrator. After moving from Pittsburgh to New York in 1949, Warhol designed store window displays and created ads for luxury brands such as Chanel and Lighthouse Footwear. Today, one can find his works at the Andy Warhol Museum located in the artists’ hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and almost every other major museum in the world.
