The Sound That Kills

Comic cartoon strips became prevalent in newspaper publications at the turn of the century, and had a major increase in popularity leading up to the Second World War. The format was popular with children and adults, and was perfect to communicate information in a clear and entertaining manner. In "The Sound That Kills", Eric Ericson creates a public service announcement regarding the theme of "Loose Talk." Here, the viewer follows a six panel story that shows how casual talk from a factory worker leads to the eventual sinking of a Navy ship.

During the Second World War, there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard by enemy agents both domestically and abroad.

Eric Ericson (1914-1959) was a student at both the Art Students League of New York and Pratt Institute of Art. He worked as a freelance cartoonist and as an illustrator for The New Yorker.
