This poster was created by prominent artist, Paul Davis for the 1976 New York revival of Bertolt Brecht's 1928 epic Threepenny Opera. The design features a portrait of lead Raul Julia (1940 - 1994) as the character Captain Macheath. The Threepenny Opera is set in Victorian London and explores the underbelly of capitalist society.
Paul Davis (b.1938) is an American graphic artist and illustrator. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Davis was hired on by celebrated graphic designer Milton Glaser to paint for Push Pin Studios. Davis’s work was recognized by many prominent leaders in the art industry, and in 1963, Davis opened Paul Davis Studio. Davis’s illustrations have appeared in noteworthy publications such as Life, Time, Playboy, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times and The Saturday Evening Post. He is also the recipient of two honorary doctorate degrees from the School of Visual Arts and Maryland Institute College of Art. He is also a fellow of the American Academy in Rome.
