VD Take Care

This is one of a series of posters created at the end of the Second World War warning our returning American soldiers that if they contracted a venereal disease ( now known as S.T.D.) they would not be allowed back into the U.S. Please see our other listing for other posters from this series.
VD Almost! is a 1946 public service announcement by Franz O. Schiffers (1902-1976). Schiffers was commissioned to create several posters warning against venereal disease aimed at the U.S serviceman overseas.
The composition, executed in rich watercolor and gouache tones, exemplifies the U.S. government's strategic use of emotionally charged imagery to promote caution and moral responsibility among troops. The warning "Take Care" in bold yellow letters reinforces the call to personal vigilance. Posters like this were part of a broader campaign by the U.S. Public Health Service and military to reduce infection rates through awareness, prevention, and medical treatment.
In the post-World War II era, the piece sent a message to prevent relations with foreigners. In today's world, these pieces are quite humorous and speak to a different time.
