James Montgomery Flagg is best known for his depiction of Uncle Sam in recruitment and public service announcement posters of both World War I and II. "You Can Lick Runaway Prices" features a new painting created by Flagg in c.1942. The poster emphasizes seven steps that the average American could do to prevent inflation. Among these points include major themes of buying war bonds, conservation, and food rationing. The seven steps correspond to the seven letters that spell "Victory." The imagery references Flagg's iconic "I Want You" poster with artistic changes. Flagg's Uncle Sam imagery carries high profile notoriety among the public and poster collectors alike.

James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) began his illustration career at the age of 12, with contributions to Life magazine by age 14. He studied in New York at the Art Students League as well as in London and Paris. He worked in a variety of illustration styles in publishing, and rose to become the top paid illustrator at the height of his career. Flagg is best known for his patriotic recruitment posters. His most famous, "I Want You," features Uncle Sam. Flagg modeled the portrait of Uncle Sam on himself, only adding a goatee and white hair. The poster was wildly successful reaching over four million copies produced during World War I alone.
