Jacques Nathan-Garamond (1910–2001), often signing his work simply as “Nathan,” was a French graphic designer and illustrator known for his elegant travel posters created during the golden age of commercial aviation. Trained in the tradition of French poster art that had flourished since the late nineteenth century, Nathan developed a style that combined clarity of design, bold color, and simplified architectural forms. During the 1950s he produced a number of striking destination posters for Air France, capturing famous European cities through stylized compositions that emphasized both cultural heritage and the modern excitement of international air travel. This poster promoting Rome for Air France presents a refined and highly stylized vision of the Eternal City. Nathan’s approach reflects the clean modernist aesthetic favored by many mid-century travel posters. Produced during the Jet Age expansion of European tourism, this poster reflects Air France’s efforts to promote cultural destinations throughout the continent to an increasingly mobile international audience. Posters such as this one were displayed in airline offices and travel agencies around the world, inspiring travelers with romantic and visually striking interpretations of Europe’s most celebrated cities.Today, the Rome – Air France poster stands as a fine example of mid-twentieth-century airline advertising, combining modern graphic design with timeless architectural imagery to capture the enduring allure of one of the world’s most historic cities. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
