In this elegant 1920s travel poster by Le’on Constant Duval, the Château d’Amboise rises in regal splendor above the banks of the Loire River. A row of charming townhouses hugs the lower slope of the hill, while the château commands the skyline — framed by soft clouds and stylized trees in rich autumn tones. In the foreground, a lone figure in a canoe drifts quietly past, reinforcing the mood of peace and timelessness.
Issued by the Chemin de Fer d’Orléans, this poster was part of a campaign promoting automobile excursions through Touraine, known as the "Garden of France." The Château d’Amboise holds a special place in French royal history: it was a favorite residence of the Valois kings, and later became the final resting place of Leonardo da Vinci, whose tomb lies in the nearby Chapel of Saint-Hubert. The poster invites travelers to explore the elegance and heritage of the Loire Valley — accessible by rail and car.
Constant Duval (1877–1956) was celebrated for his ability to capture both grandeur and quietude in his landscapes. Unlike the bold lines of contemporaries like Roger Broders, Duval favored a painterly approach — with soft tonal transitions, layered silhouettes, and a romanticized atmosphere. Here, his use of vertical framing draws the eye from the riverbank upward toward the castle, reinforcing the idea of ascent into history and splendor.
This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. It is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition apart for minor stains in the top left margin. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
