This vibrant and highly theatrical poster by Jean Dylen for Chocolat Pupier is a superb example of the playful, eye-catching advertising style that defined French posters of the interwar period. Set against a deep black background, the composition immediately commands attention with a dynamic figure dressed in a striking red costume, seemingly in motion as he balances—or perhaps struggles under—the weight of an oversized wooden crate boldly labeled “Chocolat Pupier.” The exaggerated pose, combined with the cascade of colorful chocolate packaging tumbling around him, creates a sense of movement, humor, and spectacle that draws the viewer directly into the scene.Dylen masterfully uses contrast to heighten visual impact: the brilliant yellow of the crate and the saturated red of the figure leap forward against the dark backdrop, a technique clearly influenced by the revolutionary advertising approach pioneered by Cappiello. The whimsical, almost clown-like character adds a sense of delight and accessibility, suggesting abundance and indulgence, while reinforcing the brand’s identity in a memorable and instantly recognizable way. Jean Dylen (1886 - 1938) was trained in the art of designing jewelry and was recruited by the Vercasson Printing Company to be the understudy to Leonetto Cappiello, their top designer of posters. When Cappiello left Vercasson, Dylen assumed the role of top designer. He was a master of combining humorous messages with well executed artwork and masterful colors to create some of the most sought after posters printed in the 1920's. His work is characterized by strong color contrasts, simplified compositions, and a flair for humor and narrative. Dylen created numerous iconic advertising posters in the 1920s and 1930s, often featuring bold central figures and clever visual storytelling designed to captivate passersby and communicate instantly. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in very good condition. The poster has been professionally restored to minimize the visibility of fold lines. These folds will be barely perceptible once framed. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
