Claudine is the eponymous main character of a series of novels published in the early 1900s. Written in the format of a diary, the Claudine series follows a 15 year old girl as she enters adulthood. The series was a massive success, but not without a bit of controversy.
As seen in this poster, the author of the Claudine series was advertised as ‘Willy’, a pen name for author Henry Gaulthier-Villars. His wife, Colette, was the actual author of the series and years later would take his estate to court to own the publishing rights to the series.
Here we see Claudine, staring us down with a telling smirk. She is surrounded by text about the details of the first two novels of the series; published in 1900 and 1901.
The artist of this poster is L. Lucien Faure, of which little is known. He was an active illustrator at the turn of the 20th century, and created both posters and other types of illustrations.
