The Four Courts, Ireland’s main court building is depicted in this serene, realist illustration advertising Aer Lingus’s one plane service from New York to Dublin. The Four Courts house the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the High Court and the Dublin Circuit and sits along an idyllic view of the River Laffey. A cloudless day in Dublin is captured in this poster by Raymond Teague Cowern, featuring lush trees, a gleaming riverside and birds flocking amongst the clear blue sky.

The bottom of the poster reads "Fly Irish Air Lines," "Aer Lingus" meaning air fleet and "Aerlínte Éireann" which is simply the traditional Irish spelling of Aer Lingus.

Aer Lingus today is the flag carrier airline of Ireland and the second-largest airline in the country after Ryanair. Founded by the Irish government, it was privatised between 2006 and 2015 and it is now a wholly owned subsidiary of International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways and Iberia. The airline's head office is on the grounds of Dublin Airport in Cloghran, County Dublin.

Raymond Teague Cowern (1913-1986) was a British painter, illustrator and draughtsman. Cowern studied at the Birmingham Central School of the Arts and Crafts and the Royal College of Art. At the start of World War II, Cowern joined the British army where he used his experience as an officer in numerous illustrations which were later purchased by the War Artists Advisory committee. In 1940, Cowern participated in the Recording Britain project where the artist painted and etched historic buildings in Suffolk. At the end of the war, Cowern continued his artistic career and was awarded membership to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1947. Ten years later, Cowern was elected as an associate member of the Royal Academy and later a full member. Cowern’s work can be viewed in the Imperial War Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
