Focaccia Veneziana - Large

This original vintage Italian advertising poster was created in 1932 for A. Colussi of Milan to promote its Focaccia Veneziana, a traditional Venetian sweet bread. The dramatic design combines the celebrated Lion of Saint Mark, the historic symbol of Venice, with an oversized loaf of focaccia shown prominently in the foreground. Against the deep blue, star-filled background, the winged lion rests its paw beside an open book bearing the familiar inscription “Pax Tibi Marce Evangelista Meus,” traditionally associated with Saint Mark and the city of Venice.The poster is signed Emka, an artist or studio about whom little reliable biographical information appears to have survived. The bold composition, saturated colors and monumental presentation of the product are characteristic of Italian commercial poster design of the period..A. Colussi was an Italian producer of breads, biscuits and baked goods with roots in Venice. The company developed from a family baking business and became closely associated with traditional Venetian specialties before expanding its operations and distribution throughout Italy.
