This original vintage poster, titled Canadair Forty Four Air Cargo – CL-44, was created by Erik Nitsche in 1960 for General Dynamics and its Canadian subsidiary, Canadair Limited. The poster promotes the Canadair CL-44, a large four-engine turboprop aircraft developed primarily for military and commercial cargo transportation. Nitsche depicts the streamlined aircraft in flight against a geometric background, emphasizing the CL-44's speed, range and modern engineering.General Dynamics was formed in 1952 as the parent company of the Electric Boat Company and several other U.S. defense and technology businesses. It acquired Canadair in 1954, expanding its operations into aircraft manufacturing. During this period General Dynamics became one of America's leading aerospace and defense companies, producing aircraft, submarines, missiles and other advanced technologies. The CL-44 was developed by Canadair from the Bristol Britannia and first flew in 1959. One of its most innovative features was a hinged rear fuselage that allowed the tail section to swing open, making it possible to load unusually large cargo directly into the aircraft. The CL-44 was initially developed for the Royal Canadian Air Force and was subsequently adapted for commercial air-freight operators.Erik Nitsche (1908–1998) was a Swiss-born graphic designer who moved to the United States in 1934. In 1955 he became Art Director for General Dynamics and developed the company's corporate identity, advertising, annual reports and celebrated series of posters. His General Dynamics work combined Swiss Modernist graphic design with imagery drawn from contemporary science, aviation and technology and remains among his best-known work. This poster was printed in Switzerland by R. Marsens of Lausanne. An example of Canadair Forty Four Air Cargo is held in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
