The French Woman is in full effect in this fun poster by Leroy Neiman for Givenchy perfume. She struts out of the brand’s flagship Paris boutique, bottle of champagne in hand and tiny dog in tow. Royal guards stand at attention, offering her the company’s perfume bottles in supersize scale.
Givenchy is a French fashion and perfume label that was founded by Hubert Givenchy in 1952 for "the modern woman". Givenchy designed for the newly liberated woman, who after the end of WWII saw less and less interest in fancy ball gowns. The brand became known for separates that allowed women to move comfortably and was championed by Audrey Hepburn. An early friend and supporter, Hepburn insisted Givenchy provide the clothing for most of her infamous roles.
Leroy Neiman (1921 -2012) was an American artist known for his impressionistic action paintings of sporting events and athletes. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later served as a faculty member. His first high profile work was for Playboy, for which he executed many paintings of exotic travel destinations. In the 1960's, he began his defining association with posters for sporting events including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Kentucky Derby, championship boxing, PGA and The Masters golf tournament, Wimbledon and many more. His artwork is archived in many permanent collections, including the Smithsonian, the Whitney Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum.
