Al Parker produced a number of charming Mother and Child posters to encourage home canning of fruits and vegetables during WWII. In this 1943 WWII public service announcement, Parker portrays canning as a family bonding activity that also teaches preparedness. The poster demonstrates how even the simplest efforts such as canning can help win victory.
With American entry into the war, food required to fuel the armed forces created a need for rationing on the home-front. The U.S. Government encouraged home canning of vegetables and fruits and provided information to help the public. Home-canned goods were exempt from rationing because they provided relief from farmer produce intended for the military.

Al Parker (1906-1985) was an American artist and illustrator known for his diversity of technique and content. Parker broke into the magazine industry in the mid-1930s, winning a national competition for the cover of House Beautiful. He created over 50 covers for the Ladies' Home Journal, as well as many illustrations for the major magazines of the time. Later on he was known for producing a series of Grand Prix auto racing paintings for Sports Illustrated. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators' Hall of Fame in 1965. A stamp commemorating his art was issued by the United States Postal Service in 2001 as part of the American Illustrators Issue series.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
