The Japan Air Lines (JAL) poster is based on Uemura Shōen's 1936 painting titled Jo-no-mai (also known as Noh Dance Prelude). This artwork is a celebrated example of the nihonga style, depicting a woman in a red kimono performing a traditional Noh dance. The painting is recognized as an Important Cultural Property in Japan and is housed at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts. 
In the 1960s, JAL utilized this iconic image in their promotional materials to evoke the elegance and cultural heritage of Japan, aiming to attract international travelers.
