Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 – 1900. The varied selection of prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience it showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format.

Adolphe Étienne Auguste Moreau-Nélaton (1859 - 1927) was a prominent French artist, art historian, and art collector. Moreau-Nélaton’s grandfather was a stockbroker and collector who acquainted the artist with prominent figures in art such as Eugene Delacroix and Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps. Notably, Moreau-Nélaton’s father, of the same name, directed the French railroad company Chemin de fer del’Est. Moreau-Nélaton’s artistic career began after a visit to École Normale Supérieure. He studied under painters Henri-Joseph Harpignies and Albert Maignan and first exhibited his work in the 1885 Salon De Paris. His work can be viewed in Musee d’Orsay in Paris, France.

This image was created for the 2nd Annual Exposition of Art by Women, hosted by the Central Union of Decorative Arts. The work features a female student and teacher in the central portion of the frame; the teacher points to the text on the blackboard which acts dually as the advertisement. It reads, "Les Arts de La Femme" (Art of the Woman). The student, outfitted in a yellow dress sits attentively at her desk with her pen and ink. The exhibition went from April 19th to June 10th, 1885 and was held at Palais De L’Industrie in Paris.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
