This poster from 1945 by Cecil Calvert (C.C.) Beall (1892-1967) and commissioned by the Official US Treasury was made for promoting the 7th War Loan, just days after the victory in Europe. Beall was clearly inspired by the Pulitzer Prize winning photograph by Joe Rosenthal, the raising of an American flag by American soldiers in Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima. This poster was used to encourage the public to make a last final effort and buy war bonds to ensure the good economy of the country.

The image is depicted in Beall's distinct style, with the use of watercolors and bold contrasts. The 7th War Loan raised over $26 billion in 48 days, even though officials were concerned that the defeat of Germany could decrease the sale of bonds.

C.C.Beall was an American commercial illustrator, who specialized in portraiture. He served as Art Director for the Democratic National Party. During WWII, Beall served as a war correspondent and was an eyewitness to the 1945 Japanese surrender on the U.S.S. Missouri.
Beall studied under painter George Brant Bridgman at the Art Students League in New York City. Beall's clients included many of the major magazines publications, such as Collier's, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Saturday Evening Post, and many more.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
