This very finely detailed scene shows us the group of elegant diners in a restaurant and it subtly also shows the viewer some of the liquors produced by the Pedro Domecq Company. This is the period of Arts Nouveau and very elegant styles in society. The company was founded in Spain in 1822 by Pedro Domecq Lembeye who had recently migrated to Spain from France. Upon the death of Mr. Lembeye, it was his cousin Pedro Domecq Loustau who took over the company and was credited with creating the first Spanish cognac or Brandy. The company continued to expand its product lines and developed sherries and brandies. In 1941 the company expanded into Latin America setting up brandy distilleries and soleras in Mexico and South America, and later launching Presidente in 1956 and Don Pedro in 1961. Today, Presidente brandy is the national drink of Mexico, enjoyed from beach bars to city hotels, often as a mixed drink with cola or soda. In the United States it is popular with the Mexican-American community, especially in states such as California, Texas, Florida, and Illinois.
Fernand Toussaint (1873–1956) was a Belgian painter. He began studying art with Jean-François Portaels and at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts at the age of 15. At the age of eighteen he left for Paris to continue his studies there. He made his study under the well-known Belgian portraitist Alfred Stevens. He specialized in painting portraits of women, still lifes and cityscapes, in the Impressionist, Art Nouveau, and Post-Impressionist styles. His works include paintings, watercolors and posters. He is also a famed artist to depict beautiful floral still lifes and interiors, coastal views and seascapes. In this genre his paintings have to be compare with the painters of his epoque the likes of Constant Permeke and Adrien le Mayeur de Merprès, that influenced much his own manner. One of the Belgian art critics of that time, Camille Lemonnier said about Toussaint, that he was "one of the painters that broadened the horizon of the peaceful and intimate landscape". Beginning from 1895 Toussaint had been receiving a lot of orders for commercial posters for different official events.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
