This vintage poster advertised travel via the Santa Fe Railroad. The word Santa Fe on the blue, encircled cross was the logo for the company. They chose an iconic image of a Native American chief to align their railroad with a romanticized version of America's old west. They named a number of their trains "Chief," including San Francisco Chief, Texan Chief, Kansas City Chief and Super Chief. The company began in the mid-1800s. It created demand by accepting land grants from Congress which were then sold off in small pieces to farmers and eventually became one of the largest US rail companies. The company merged with Burlington Northern Railroad in 1996.
The viewer sees a proud Native American is his headdress . This is encouraging potential travelers to visit the Southwestern part of the United States to see many of the indiginous people of the area.
