Nearly 150 years old, Schaal Chocolatier is a French chocolate shop founded in Strasbourg, France in 1871. For over a century, Schaal Chocolatier holds a tradition of excellence and high professional standards. It has met the fine food lovers’ expectation for gourmet sweets by its first class expertise in chocolate making. Schaal seeks the best raw materials across the globe from France to Ecuador, and manufactures its unique coatings in the workshop. With a team of 200, the company constantly searches for cocoas of different origins to keep its diversity and innovation. The shop also has the tradition to provide the made to order service. Customers are welcomed to become the creators of the recipes.

In this poster, Faivre portrayed a man in a pointed hat riding a bird with a cocoa branch and a sign of Schaal in his hands. It is uncertain whether the artist was depicting a particular type of bird, but the beautiful colors of blue, white, and red coincide with the French flag. The man seems extremely proud to have found this cocoa branch for the Schaal Chocolatier; he holds it so high that even the frame cannot contain it within. This imagery of riding a bird to find cocoa branches implies the company’s tradition in searching for the best raw material for its products.

Jules Abel Faivre (1867 - 1945) was a French painter, illustrator, and cartoonist. Born in Lyon, France, he attended École Nationale des Beaux Arts de Lyon for three years and then attended the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian. In his career, he created propaganda posters for the French Army in the World War I, and drew comics for Le Rire, L'Écho de Paris, and Le Figaro. After he passed away in 1945, a boulevard in La Croix-Valmer is named after him. His works are held in the collections of the National Library of Medicine, the University of Michigan, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Brooklyn Museum.
