Luigi Castiglioni (1936 - 2003) once said, "There is no need to show dedication, everybody [already] knows that it is inseparable from sports". Instead, he chose to highlight the quietly elegant and dynamic nature of athletics in his designs. This poster is from Castiglioni's retrospective series of his best tennis images. This image was originally created for Homme Victoire in 1981.

Luigi Castiglioni was raised and educated in Milan, Italy. After completing studies at the Accademia Belle Arti, he began his professional career as a set designer for the opera and film industries. His pivot to poster design coincided with his move to Paris in 1960. Once in France, Castiglioni quickly made a name for himself by applying his trademark style of refinement and surrealism to the subject of sports. From boxing to rugby, Castiglioni created poster designs that were very different from the typical brash and rough depictions of the time. His style was immensely popular for obvious reasons, and he created over 300 poster designs during his career.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
