In the post-World War II era, commercial travel by airplane was growing dramatically and the airlines made very effective use of posters to encourage more travel to various American destinations. In this beautiful design created by Joseph Binder, an elegant sailboat clips through the water in front of what appears to be Mount Ranier. This is one of a series of posters designed by Binder for United Airlines.

United Airlines, Inc., commonly referred to as United, is a major U.S. airline headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. It is the world's third-largest airline when measured by revenue, after American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. United operates a large domestic and international route network, with an extensive presence in the Asia-Pacific region. United is a founding member of Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance. United was founded in 1926 as Varney Air Lines and was later known as United Air Lines (UAL). Just prior to the use of the United Airlines name, The Boeing Company operated a predecessor airline.

Born in Vienna and trained as a painter at the Kunstgewerbeschüle, Joseph Binder's (1898 - 1972) early designs won numerous international competitions that placed his posters in public spaces throughout Europe. A leader in the emerging field of graphic design, Binder felt that posters were "an expression of contemporary civilization reduced to its simplest forms for instantaneous visual communication." In 1933 Binder was invited to serve as a graphic arts lecturer at the Art Institute of Chicago, and within the next few years moved to the United States permanently. He won numerous awards for his poster designs, including national competitions sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art, the United States Navy, the United Nations, the Red Cross, and the 1939 New York World's Fair. - "Smithsonian Art Museum"

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
