The naval and armed forces of the allied countries of World War II are united in this 1943 American issued poster by Leslie Ragan. Ragan was well known for his travel posters that featured billowing clouds as well as his art deco sensibilities, which can be seen in this artwork. This poster reflects the theme of "United." The "United" theme is carried through a number of posters of this era and were used as a rally for the home front, but also served as a reminder of the United States' allies in the war. This includes awareness of Stalin's Soviet Russia as a friend in the aftermath of Nazi Germany's 1941 betrayal of the country.
Leslie Ragan (1897-1972) studied at the Cumming School of Art as well as the Art Institute of Chicago. He served in the Air Force during World War I before entering into his illustrious graphic arts career. Ragan is mostly known for his iconic travel posters of New York and Chicago, as well as his many illustrations of locomotives during the art deco era.
