Escaping city life became possible for many following the expansion of train travel in the early 1900s. This poster promotes travel from bustling Florence, Italy to the close spa area of Vallombrosa which is in the Saltino region. Vallombrosa is a forested park area that was home to many resorts in the first half of the 20th century. Use of the bucolic land goes back as far as the 15th century, when a Benedictine Abbey was built; it still stands to this day. The abbey can be seen through the trees of this poster.

ENIT, The Italian National Tourist Board, was founded in 1919 with the objective of attracting visitors to Italy from around the globe. In this case, ENIT was likely promoting travel to the outer countryside to locals that lived in Florence.

Unfortunately, we know little about the artist of this appealing image.

  • If there's anything you want to know about posters, vintage or more modern, there's nothing Mr Ross doesn't know. His open and friendly manner helps one to choose the most suitable material whether for decoration, investment or whatever... I can't recommend him highly enough.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
