1925 was an important year in the life of both Paul Colin and Josephine Baker. The two met when a French nightclub director was putting together his latest show, with a focus on the many talented Black performers converging on Paris in the inter-war years. The show would become known as La Revue Negre. Colin, by far a household name at the time, was invited to sit in on a rehearsal to begin brainstorming a poster design to promote the new show. He deemed the lead singer a bit lackluster, but was drawn to a chorus girl with confidence he had never seen before - none other than Josephine Baker. She became the new star of the show (and from there it was off to the races), and Colin's career blossomed alongside her. This gallery poster for a show of Colin's works from that era, to be held at the Galerie Pricker in Paris, is a modern re-imagining by the artist of that very first poster that launched both legends' careers.

Paul Colin (1892 - 1986) is one of the most well-regarded Art Deco poster artists. He rose to fame in 1925 with his poster for the Revue Negre, which helped catapult the fame of Josephine Baker. Paul Colin spent his career in the performing arts; creating over 1400 posters, as well as designing costumes and sets for various types of performances. His posters are highly sought after.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
